Renters Insurance Coverage

The HO-4 form provides coverage for renters’ personal contents. The only property coverages included on a HO-4 form are Coverage C and Coverage D. Personal liability coverage is also attached to the HO-4 form, and there is a $100,000 minimum coverage requirement for liability. Coverage on a renter’s personal contents starts at a $10,000 minimum coverage amount, with maximum coverage of $100,000 available. The deductible for a HO-4 policy is $500, with a $1,000 deductible for losses by wind and hail. The following perils are covered under a HO-4 policy:

  • Fire & Lightning
  • Wind & Hail
  • Explosion
  • Riot or Civil Commotion
  • Aircraft
  • Vehicle
  • Smoke
  • Volcanic Eruption
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Falling Objects
  • Weight of Ice, Sleet, or Snow
  • Cracking, Burning, or Bulging of a Heating or Cooling System
  • Overflow of Water or Steam
  • Freezing
  • Artificially Generated Electrical Currents
  • Sinkhole Collapse
  • Refrigerated Foods Spoilage
Additionally, renters may choose to purchase Home Systems Protection as an add-on to their policy. This helps cover mechanical or electrical breakdown to any electronics the renter may own, as well as providing coverage for any personally owned appliances that were not furnished by the landlord.
