Types of Perils

Basic Perils

These perils are the basic perils found in our Fire and Extended Coverage (FEC) policies, and are included for all Fire and Extended Coverage and Homeowners policies. 

Coverage for fire and lightning losses.

Coverage for losses by explosion.

Does not include losses from the following conditions:

  • Loss to interior of building or property inside a building caused by dust, rain, sand, sleet, snow, or water which enter through an opening not cause by the direct force of wind or hail.
  • Wind or hail damage to watercraft and their trailers, furnishings, equipment, and motors unless they are inside a fully enclosed building. Canoes and rowboats that are on the premises and not fully enclosed are considered covered losses.
  • Damage to outdoor antennas, including their lead-in wiring, masts, and towers.

 

Covers losses to property resulting from a riot or civil commotion.

Covers direct loss from actual physical contact of an aircraft with covered property. This peril also covers damage as a result of falling objects from an aircraft.

Covers damage to your property resulting from a collision with a vehicle. However, this peril does not apply to damage to fences, driveways, and walkways caused by a vehicle owned by you or an occupant of the insured premises.

Does not cover smoke damaging resulting from agricultural smudging or industrial operations. 

Covers losses resulting from the sudden settlement or collapse of earth supporting your covered property. The earth settlement or collapse must result from subterranean voids created by the action of water eroding a limestone or similar rock formation. Losses to land value or costs associated with filling a sinkhole are not covered.

Covers losses that are a result of damage from airborne volcanic blast or shockwaves, ash, dust, or particulate matter, or lava flow. Costs for removal of ash, dust, or particulate matter not causing direct physical loss to your covered property is not covered under this peril.

Losses are not covered if the residence that is vandalized has been vacant for more than 30 days in a row before the loss. Residences under construction are not considered vacant.

Broad Perils

These perils are the perils found in broad form coverages, such as a form FL-502, FL-2, HO-2, HO-4, or HO-6. Any coverage that includes the broad form perils also includes the basic perils shown above. 

Covers losses up to $20,000 for physical damage to property caused by water that backs up through sewers or drains, or water that overflows from a sump pump, sump pump well, or other type of system that removes subsurface water. This coverage does not apply to farm property on Coverage E, F, or G.

Covers losses to damaged property caused by burglars. Losses that occur at a premises that has been vacant for 30 days or more in a row before the loss are not covered. Residences under construction are not considered vacant.

Does not include losses from the following conditions:

  • Loss to the interior of a building or the property inside the building unless the falling object has first damaged an outside wall or the roof by impact.
  • Damage to outdoor antennas, including their lead-in wiring, masts, and towers.
  • Damage to outdoor awnings or canopies including their supports.
  • Damage to fences or to outdoor equipment not permanently installed.
  • Damage to the object that fell.

Covers damage from the weight of ice, sleet, or snow to a structure or the property inside. However, a loss is not covered under the following conditions:

  • Damage to outdoor antennas, including their lead-in wiring, masts, and towers.
  • Damage to outdoor awnings or canopies including their supports.
  • Damage to outdoor structures (other than buildings, carports, or mobile homes) such as swimming pools, fences, patios, paved areas, retaining walls, bulkheads, foundations, wharves, docks, piers, underground pipes, flues, drains, and cesspools.
  • Damage to outdoor equipment not permanently installed.

Does not cover losses to tubes, transistors, or similar electronic components.

Covers losses due to damage from freezing to plumbing, heating systems, air-conditioning systems, automatic sprinkler systems, water heaters, or a domestic appliance. Losses are not paid if the residence is vacant and unoccupied or under construction and unoccupied, unless you have taken reasonable care to:

  • Maintain heat in the building or mobile home.
  • Shut off the liquid supply and drain the system, domestic appliance, or heater.

 

Covers losses due to sudden or accidental tearing apart, cracking, burning, or bulging of a heating, air-conditioning, or automatic sprinkler system, or a water heater. Losses caused by freezing are not covered under this peril.

Covers losses from accidental discharge or overflow of liquids or steam from plumbing, a heating, air-conditioning, or automatic sprinkler system, a water heater, or domestic appliances. However, losses are not covered under the following conditions:

  • Damage caused by continuous or repeated seepage or leakage.
  • Damage caused by freezing
  • Damage caused by water discharge or overflow that occurs on the insured’s premises but originates off the insured’s premises.
  • Damage that occurs if the residence has been vacant for 30 days in a row or more. A residence under construction is not vacant.
  • Losses are not paid for the system, heater, or appliance which the liquid or steam escapes itself. However, we will cover the reasonable cost of removing and replacing the parts of the system, heater, or appliance needed to repair it.
Under this peril, plumbing systems do not include a sump, sump pump, or other related equipment.
